He will be turning 12 next month but has already bought his first car, a Toyota Starlet which he plans to work on with the help of his family. He hopes to be the next Hayden Paddon. The young fans stood eagerly watching John’s plane land while the crowd behind them readied their surprise greeting. And what a surprise it was for John who wasn’t expecting anyone at Marlborough Airport, let alone fans, friends

and family, says his wife Satu Lappalainen. “He had no idea I was even here,” she laughs. “I think he was planning to take a taxi home, but after his achievement we couldn’t not be here for him.” John and Hayden were the first New Zealanders to ever win a round of the FIA World Rally Championship, after taking the victory last month at Rally Argentina. He says the level of support for himself and Hayden has been ‘phenomenal’.

“I honestly had no idea about this, but the response we have had since the win is incredible, even on a local level,” he says. Asked what his plans were once he was home, John replies; “There is work that needs to be finished in the vineyard, and we plan to catch up with family in Christchurch during my time home.” There will be little rest for John though, who flies out next Tuesday for the next WRC round in Portugal. He is not due back home until November.

Matriarch inspires sparkling wine Story and photo by Cathie Bell Saint Clair Family Estate has launched its premium sparkling wine, and owner Neal Ibbotson describes it as ‘101 years in the making’. The wine, the Saint Clair methode traditionelle Dawn, is named after Neal’s mother Dawn, a character who Neal describes as sparkling as the wine. About 100 people, mostly Saint Clair winery staff and suppliers, gathered at the winery’s cellar door in Selmes Road on Friday night to officially launch the wine and to toast Dawn with her wine. This wine has been four years in the making, Neal says. “It seems like an age, but nothing compared to my mother Dawn, aged 101, living in her home in Dunedin. “Like the wine, she has a sparkle, an effervescence, that lights up a room.” He says his mother is a remarkable

person. A fervent supporter of the wine company, she has a glass of wine every day at 5.30pm, and invites other people to have a glass and enjoy life, Neal says. She loves screwcaps, he says, ‘far better than those awful old corks’. “I asked her about her aches and pains and she says she doesn’t have any, it’s all the fine wine I send her.” The handpicked chardonnay and pinot noir fruit in the Dawn methode traditionelle wine comes from the ‘kitchen’ vineyard, in front of the winery’s cellar door in Selmes Road, Neal says. Kids’ fishing glee fuels plans Story and photos by Cathie Bell A strong turnout of children to a Fish & Game “kids fish out day” in Blenheim is prompting the organisation to look at building a special fishing area for young people in Marlborough. Fish & Game Nelson Marlborough manager Rhys Barrier says the organisation runs a fishing area for young people in Tasman which is very popular and the concept could work well in Marlborough too. “We’re looking to get a youth facility here.” The Waimea Park Fish Out Ponds, off River Road near the Appleby Bridge on the Motueka Road State Highway 60, are open to the public for junior fishing by children aged six to 16 by permit only. Rhys says Fish & Game will talk with the Marlborough District Council and others in Marlborough to see if the ponds could be built here. The children taking part on Saturday had a great time, with each angler’s catch being celebrated noisily. Jarod Henn, 11, caught the first fish of the day, shortly after it opened at 9am. Children who caught fish were shown how to fillet them, and then given the fillets to take home. Marlborough field officer Vaughan Lynn says about 60 rainbow trout were released into the Taylor River near the Boathouse Theatre into a netted-off area for the children to fish in. Experienced anglers helped the children learn to cast their hooks and helped them bring in the fish they caught, and then showed them how to fillet them. “The event is to get kids introduced to fishing. Hopefully they will catch one here, get a few skills, transfer that out to the natural rivers,’ he says. “You’ve got to start somewhere. I remember coming to one of these things as a kid and getting hooked.” Saturday’s Kids Fish Out Day was held with support from the Marlborough Freshwater Anglers’ Club and Hendersons Blenheim. Fish & Game councillor Jim Anderson says the fish were bred in Otago, and were brought

Changes are being made to the Picton ferry terminal as KiwiRail will be without a rail-capable ferry for two months while Aratere is in drydock in Singapore. All rail freight will be transferred to trailers and towed onto the ships, and the entrance for private vehicle checkin is being shifted from Lagoon Road to Auckland Street, with extensions to the terminal’s container transfer area. Interislander General Manager Operations Mark Thompson says the increased activity at the terminal ‘inevitably’ means some increase in noise from the site.

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Beds are being dug alongside Grove Road at the corner with Pitchell Street as the start of plantings to beautify the entrance to Blenheim. The work started last week, and Marlborough District Councillor Peter Jerram, who is on the council’s landscape group, says it is exciting to see the plantings start ‘finally’. “It’s been a long time coming…We’ve wanted to do this for a long time. “Through the landscape group, we’ve managed to get buy-in from most of the properties in Grove Road, and I hope when people can see how good it looks with the plantings, the few who haven’t will come onboard when they see the advantages.”

Peter says he is looking forward to seeing what is ‘at the moment a dreary industrial entrance and exit to Blenheim turn into green, vibrant, and attractive’. The plantings are to be a mix of native and exotic plants, some evergreen, and some deciduous. The work is estimated to cost about $55,000. Fellow councillor Jamie Arbuckle says the plantings are ‘a good start’ and a good way of breaking up the landscape. It is “always one of the comments about how it looks, entering Blenheim,’ he says and the plantings will be a good improvement. “I hope we can carry it on and get more work done…I hope this is a catalyst for some more.”

The other night endeavouring to enter the Clubs of Marlborough parking area, there were theatre patrons many elderly coming from the theatre. There was traffic coming into town along Hutcheson Street with very limited visibility for me turning in, plus the streaming mob of pedestrians. The result was pedestrian bewilderment and potential accident material with traffic chaos. Mr Bill Floyd I read has admirably highlighted the poor traffic planning. Well done William. Councillor Jessica Bagge highlighted the protruding building onto the road. Remember? Good on her. So the siting was poor. Another aspect is cost. The original estimate I believe was $12 million but that rose rapidly to $22 m and now more. Throw in the associated parking building and it is heading for $30 m. It may go as high as $35 m. How could staff get estimates so wrong? I repeat the theatre is a wonderful asset. But accountability and transparency seemed totally lacking, otherwise there would not be the “blowout.” Also the theatre might have been in a far better place. Don Coyote

April, I would reiterate the ongoing problem of poor sealing maintenance to SH1 between Picton & Blenheim. We have travelled this stretch regularly for the past 13 years without incident but this month our windscreens have sustained multiple chips. Response from KiwiBank Dear Ed, We appreciate public feedback on the Kiwibank and postal services available in Picton (Call for upgrade of KiwiBank services, 22 April). We’ve already made a number of improvements to the layout and facilities for Kiwibank and NZ Post customers at the Fresh Choice supermarket. This included installing a new counter, signage, queue streaming and privacy screens and the changes have been well received. Some months ago we also started the process of finding a new location for a Kiwibank ATM in Picton. We hope to confirm a location soon and would like the community to know that we expect an ATM to be in place in August. In the interim, local Kiwibank customers

with a Picton address and a Free Up account can undertake cash withdrawals free of charge at the Fresh Choice Picton branch. A letter about the fee waiver went to these customers last month. A life on the water

John Young of Clearwater Mussels, based in Havelock, was named South Island Farmer of the Year for 2015, the first time a marine farmer has won the award. Cathie Bell went along on the field trip to learn how he did it.

Some men are into cars or motorbikes or a particular sports team and can tell you absolutely everything about them in minute detail – John Young is like that about greenshell mussels. He makes everyone on a recent field trip into Pelorus Sound to visit mussel farms gasp when he says that greenshell mussels drink 360 litres of water a day – “that’s more than your average university student drinks,” one participant jokes. The lifecycle of the mussel, its likes and dislikes, they’re all something he can muse upon, the way other men might about dogs, horses, or cars. While they’re a ‘lovely product’, the creatures themselves are difficult things to grow, he says. It’s a complicated balance between what comes down the river, what wells up from the Cook Strait flows, and the level of sunlight. “Everything has to be right or it disappears into the void as a young mussel or just curls up its toes.” Originally a marine biologist, John came to Havelock in 1974, met partner Lyn Godsiff, and joined the mussel industry in 1984, adopting methods from

Spain and later Japan, before developing his own farms and technology. That passion for mussels, the industry, technology has seen John over 23 years grow their Waitaria Bay company, originally called ‘Clark Island’, to produce 2200 tonnes of mussels from 16 farms by 2007. In 2007, Clearwater Mussels was formed when John and Lyn amalgamated Clark Island with PBT Mussels and Talleys, and he

then managed 28 farms producing 5000 tonnes. That has continued to grow, this year producing 10,000 tonnes – about 11 per cent of the total industry’s production – from 90 farms in the Marlborough Sounds and Golden Bay, with a goal of 12,000 tonnes by next year. His passion for mussels, his industry, and his company with Lyn saw Clearwater Mussels awarded joint winner of last year’s Lincoln University Foundation

South Island Farmer of the Year Competition (with Omarama Station near Te Anau). The foundation held its first ever winner’s field day at sea, with about 200 people taking three boats from Havelock to see Clearwater’s Kenepuru Sounds farm. While the sea was a new environment for many, John says it was the same for both land and marine farmers – ‘it’s about feeding plants to animals so they can turn it into protein for people to eat’. Many issues are the same, but marine farmers have more tensions with the wider community as they use public water space and there are competing uses. Looking after the water is important to marine farmers because quality of the water affects the quality of our product, John says. “Looking after our water is a passion of mine. One of the reasons I’ve invested my life in this industry is because this is one of the most efficient and sustainable forms of primary production. “From below, it’s just mussels hanging out...We could leave it now, it would leave no footprint.”

Friend’s portrait wins Story and photos by Cathie Bell A portrait of a friend by Picton artist Caroline della Porta is the winning entry in the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards. Caroline was one of three local artists to win at the awards ceremony on Saturday evening, Her acrylic on board painting, Tu Mai Ra, was praised by the judges for its strongly emotional material conveyed by the weathered hands and face. She says she is ‘overwhelmed’ by the award. While she has been drawing ‘all my life’, this is only the second portrait she has painted, after one of her son. “I’m so happy to have been given this award in Marlborough. I’ve lived here 16 years, I love this place.” Her other passion is teaching children art, and she used her speech to encourage people to help her find a space where children could come to create art in a working studio environment. Blenheim photographer Simon Greenwood won two awards with his entry “Ghosts of Perano”, a digital photography artwork. Simon says he loves the electronic medium, ‘it’s better than the darkroom ever was’. “It has an undo button which I use all the time. I take my hat off to people who don’t use the undo button, or who don’t have it to use.”

The judges praised his work for its ‘exceptional detail’ and ‘skilful composition’. Marlborough Art Society president Peter Davidson says the number of entries is up on last year, and they are of a very high standard. “There is some very impressive work.” The awards attracted a wide range of entries from around New Zealand, with sponsor Anton James from Peters Doig Chartered Accountants saying about 40 per cent were from locals. Judges Wendy Murphy and Will Soward encouraged people to enter next year’s awards, and to enter open shows where it was possible to see your own work in relation to that of others. The best third of the 147 entries are on display at the Yealands Art Gallery in High Street, Blenheim. The awards were:

First marine ambulance launched in Picton By Glenise Dreaver About two hundred supporters gathered in Picton Marina on Sunday to celebrate the launch of Bluebridge Rescue, New Zealand’s first-ever marine rescue ambulance. Four years of fundraising raised over $1 million for the vessel, a combined Coastguard Marlborough and St John initiative. Bluebridge’s naming rights are the result of generous and ongoing donations,” Coastguard Marlborough executive member Dave Baker says. The 14.1 metre craft was designed by Picton firm Naiad and built by Cuddons. It is powered by three 350 hp Yamahas and the unique hull design makes the boat as economical to run as its much smaller predecessor, powered by only two engines. The vessel can respond to

emergencies in Queen Charlotte Sound within 30 minutes of leaving Picton, with a further 30 minutes to the outer Sounds. Time is also gained in the 60 per cent of callouts that are medical emergencies as St John paramedics no longer have to unload vital gear from the ambulance before setting out. They can treat ill or injured patients in a fully-fitted-out ambulance bay in the stern, rather than in the cramped and uncomfortable conditions of the much smaller earlier boat. Moutere women’s rugby looking to recruit Story and photo by Cathie Bell Moutere Rugby’s women’s team is looking for more players and a coach, and all women are welcome. The team’s first game is on Friday night at the club’s home ground, Awarua Park in Spring Creek. Helen Leota says at the moment, the women are coaching themselves. Manager/player Courtney Stewart says they have enough players to field a team, but more would be good, along with a coach. “It doesn’t matter what experience or age players are, or their fitness level, everyone is welcome, we’re really inclusive.” Kelly Couper says they are trying to grow women’s rugby in Marlborough, after fielding a

women’s team for the first time last season. “We need new faces really, more interest.” Kelly says the team has an incentive to build up to, with the chance of being selected for the Tasman Makos’ women’s team to play in the Women’s Provincial Competition. Players from the Moutere team were selected last season. “Now we have something to strive towards, it gives us more purpose.” The game is something the women love – Courtney has been playing since she was five, Helen since she was 14, and Kelly has been playing for about 10 years. Rainbow Ski Area Opening Day Marlborough’s skifield Rainbow is to open its 2016 season on July 9, Sport Tasman says. The season is to kick off at 9am on Saturday July 9 with a free open day until 4pm. Rainbow Skifield is off State Highway 63, on the way to Nelson Lakes.

Pigeons make good time Pigeons from the Blenheim Racing Pigeon club had their seventh race of the season on Saturday from Rangiora, a distance of 235 km. The birds were liberated at 8.30 am in fair weather conditions and with no wind to favour any of the routes home the birds generally made good times across a range of loft locations. The winning birds made a speed of 71 km/hr to the loft of Alister Cooper at Renwick, second and third positions went to husband and wife fanciers, Shirley and Donald Morrison at Spring Creek with 69.5 km/hr and 69.2 km/hr respectively. Another close fought result was with Rob and Neil of Nearo lofts with Rob just edging out Neil with a speed of 68.73 km/hr against 68.71 km/hr. Two Fishers loft also continued their close results with Chris Bensley with the former achieving 63.4 km/hr and Chris on 63 km/hr. Carl and Sindy Kirkwood were also fractions apart with Carl’s bird on 62.73 km/hr and Sindy 62.7 km/hr.
